{"id":9117,"date":"2017-06-26T10:55:22","date_gmt":"2017-06-26T16:55:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jasonbennion.com\/?p=9117"},"modified":"2017-06-26T10:55:22","modified_gmt":"2017-06-26T16:55:22","slug":"renown-um-no","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jasonbennion.com\/index.php\/2017\/06\/26\/renown-um-no\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Renown?&#8221; Um, No"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Okay, kids, it&#8217;s time for another fun-filled episode of <em>Copy Editor Pet Peeves<\/em> with your charmingly curmudgeonish host, <em>me<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>I was just reading an article on &#8220;bad movies that are fun to watch&#8221; (you know the type) and I saw this sentence referring to the iconic Patrick Swayze vehicle <em>Road House<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;&#8230;let\u2019s act like America is a country where club bouncers are revered and <strong>renown<\/strong> like celebrities&#8230;&#8221; [emphasis mine]<\/p>\n<p>Um, no.<\/p>\n<p>No, no, no, no.<\/p>\n<p>NO.<\/p>\n<p>The word is <em>not<\/em> &#8220;renown.&#8221; Not in this context, anyhow. I&#8217;ve been seeing this error a lot recently, almost as if it&#8217;s just suddenly and spontaneously become a thing, and it&#8217;s driving me nuts. For the record &#8212; and write this down, you <em>will<\/em> be graded &#8212; it&#8217;s &#8220;renowned&#8221; with an &#8220;-ed&#8221; at the end. RenownED.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Renown&#8221; is a noun meaning &#8220;acclaim.&#8221; It&#8217;s something you possess or are given. If you are fortunate enough to have someone give you renown, then you are renowned, just as you are &#8220;acclaimed&#8221; when you receive acclaim. Simple, right? And yet people are blowing it all the time&#8230; even in a sentence where it&#8217;s preceded by the correct past participle &#8220;revered.&#8221; Didn&#8217;t it look strange to have one action-word ending in &#8220;-ed&#8221; but not the other?<\/p>\n<p>Sigh. &#8220;Renowned,&#8221; not &#8220;renown.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><iframe width=\"725\" height=\"408\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/P8E7_u2qgjE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Okay, kids, it&#8217;s time for another fun-filled episode of Copy Editor Pet Peeves with your charmingly curmudgeonish host, me.
