<\/a><\/p>\nOkay, so I’m being a little facetious. I’m not actually all that high up — I’m only on the fourth floor of a six-story building — and the building itself ain’t all that fabulous, either. It’s nice enough, and I’m quite fond of it, but it’s got problems; the best descriptor for it is probably “faded elegance.” For example, we have a white marble staircase in the lobby, but the steps themselves are chipped, cracked, and worn down in the center from about 100 years worth of passing shoe leather. And let us not discuss the air-conditioning situation, or rather the lack thereof… Still, as I said, I generally like the place. It suits my old-tymey sensibilities.<\/p>\n
In case you’re curious, the building to the left in the photo above is a low-rent flophouse, while the one on the right houses a number of law offices and other high-paid professional types. It makes for an interesting mix of people down on the sidewalk level.<\/p>\n
I find it curious, however, that the building which houses the lawyers seems to have such a half-assed fire-escape system. Look closely at this blow-up. Click to enlarge if you need to:<\/p>\n
