This has left me in the frustrating position of having many things I’d like to write about here at Simple Tricks, but not enough time to actually do the writing. Rest assured, my loyal readers, that there is some actual content in the offing… it just may take a while to get here. In the meantime, I thought I’d throw you a bone by offering up the following examination of my personal reading habits.

First, a little back story: my friend Jen maintains a blog over at LiveJournal.com. A few days ago, she posted up a list of books that is apparently making the rounds of the LiveJournal community. It’s kind of an on-going literary game — the instructions that come with the list are as follow:

Mark the books you’ve read in bold text.

Italicize the books you’ve started, but never finished.

Underline the ones you own but haven’t gotten around to reading yet.

Add three titles of your own to the list before posting it to your LiveJournal.

Well, obviously, this isn’t a LiveJournal, but I thought it looked like a fun little activity, and figured it would be a quick ‘n’ dirty way of posting an entry for whoever might be reading while I work on other pieces.

A couple of quick observations, then on with the list. First, I was pleased to see that I’ve read many of the classics on the list, but I realized that I read most of them back in school (either high school or college) and that I don’t remember a lot about most of them. I rarely fail to finish a book, so that category didn’t get much of a workout here. And, finally, I was surprised to see a lot of titles on this list that I don’t recognize. I’ve always prided myself on being fairly well-read. Perhaps I’m not as literary as I like to imagine myself. Anyhow, without further ado, the list. Bambi, Felix Salten

Here are my additions:

344. The Anubus Gates, Tim Powers — One of my all-time favorites, a brilliant fantasy novel that blends time travel, Egyptian mythology, Romantic poets, werewolves, zombies, and songs by The Beatles. It sounds like a mess, I know, but trust me, it’s a helluva read, possibly the best by a very underrated novelist.

345. Have Spacesuit, Will Travel, Robert Heinlein — Heinlein wrote a lot of books that would be worth recommending, but this has always been my favorite, probably because it was the first.
