{"id":499,"date":"2006-03-15T11:41:02","date_gmt":"2006-03-15T11:41:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jasonbennion.com\/?p=499"},"modified":"2006-03-15T11:41:02","modified_gmt":"2006-03-15T11:41:02","slug":"ancient_computers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jasonbennion.com\/index.php\/2006\/03\/15\/ancient_computers\/","title":{"rendered":"Ancient Computers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Once, a long, long time ago, <a title=\"Please Allow Me to Introduce Myself\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbennion.com\/2004\/02\/please_allow_me_to_introduce_m\/\">I wrote<\/a> on this blog that I remembered &#8220;when computers were large metal cabinets that contained spinning tape reels and lots of blinky lights.&#8221; If you remember that, too, and want to reminisce, or if you&#8217;re one of them youngish whippersnappers who can&#8217;t imagine what those zinc-plated, vaccuum-tubed days of yore must&#8217;ve looked like, head on over to James Lileks&#8217; latest offering, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lileks.com\/institute\/compupromo\/index.html\">collection of vintage promotional computer photos<\/a> enlightened by his wry (and unabashedly geeky) commentary.<\/p>\n<p>I especially liked the commentary on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lileks.com\/institute\/compupromo\/5.html\">this one<\/a>, in which Jim manages to reference <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Colossus:_The_Forbin_Project\"><i>Colossus: The Forbin Project<\/i><\/a>, <i>The Terminator<\/i>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Puttin%27_On_The_Ritz\"><i>Young Frankenstein<\/i><\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kenny_Baker\"><i>Star Wars<\/i><\/a> in less than 300 words.
