{"id":1350,"date":"2008-04-02T15:36:56","date_gmt":"2008-04-02T15:36:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jasonbennion.com\/?p=1350"},"modified":"2008-04-02T15:36:56","modified_gmt":"2008-04-02T15:36:56","slug":"bob_clampetts_barsoom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jasonbennion.com\/index.php\/2008\/04\/02\/bob_clampetts_barsoom\/","title":{"rendered":"Bob Clampett&#8217;s Barsoom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You may recall me mentioning a while back that <a title=\"Pixar Is Going to Barsoom!\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonbennion.com\/2007\/10\/pixar_is_going_to_barsoom\/\">Pixar is adapting<\/a> Edgar Rice Burroughs&#8217; fabulous pulp novels about John Carter of Mars into a mixed live-action\/CGI film trilogy. Well, I&#8217;ve just learned they&#8217;re not the first animators to take a crack at ERB&#8217;s manly Virginia gentleman who becomes the warlord of an alien world. Another attempt was made to translate Carter to film way back in the 1930s by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bob_Clampett\">Bob Clampett<\/a>, an alumnus of Warner Brothers&#8217; famous <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Termite_Terrace\">Termite Terrace<\/a> and the director of many well-known Looney Tunes shorts (including one of my favorites, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Falling_Hare\"><i>Falling Hare<\/i><\/a>, in which Bugs Bunny battles a gremlin).<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.amctv.com\/scifi-scanner\/2008\/04\/john-carter-mars-video.php\">this guy<\/a>, the attempt never amounted to much, because Clampett and ERB had a different creative vision than the movie studios &#8212; unthinkable, I know! &#8212; but Clampett got as far as making some test footage, which I now present as a Fascinating Historical Curiosity:<\/p>\n<p><object width=\"425\" height=\"355\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"wmode\" value=\"transparent\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/1H2ZdSbyHhQ&amp;hl=en\" \/><embed width=\"425\" height=\"355\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/1H2ZdSbyHhQ&amp;hl=en\" wmode=\"transparent\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know about you, but I think that stuff looks really cool, very much in the vein of the extremely nifty <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Superman_(1940s_cartoons)\">Superman shorts<\/a> produced by Max Fleischer in the &#8217;40s. The running thoat &#8212; the eight-legged animal &#8212; is especially impressive. Sigh.
