{"id":1119,"date":"2007-08-29T16:23:49","date_gmt":"2007-08-29T16:23:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jasonbennion.com\/?p=1119"},"modified":"2007-08-29T16:23:49","modified_gmt":"2007-08-29T16:23:49","slug":"remake_roundup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jasonbennion.com\/index.php\/2007\/08\/29\/remake_roundup\/","title":{"rendered":"Remake Round-up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Genre fans like myself have done a lot of groaning in recent days over the news that Hollywood &#8212; which lately seems to be more interested in leveraging recognizable brands (i.e., churning out new versions of properties whose names are already familiar to movie-goers) than in filming original screenplays &#8212; is forging ahead with a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/hr\/content_display\/film\/news\/e3i5576ba19c7882ece656854ea732017c8\">remake of <i>Escape from New York<\/i><\/a> and that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.variety.com\/VR1117970896.html\">Keanu will be playing Klaatu<\/a> in a new version of <i>The Day the Earth Stood Still<\/i>. (Actually, he&#8217;ll probably be just fine in that role; he even has a passing resemblance to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Michael_Rennie\">Michael Rennie<\/a>. It&#8217;s just the principle of remaking an undisputed classic like <i>Day<\/i> that bothers me.) So it came as a pleasant surprise to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cinematical.com\/2007\/08\/28\/bruce-campbell-wont-do-bubba-nosferatu\/\">read about<\/a> an interview with the eternally awesome <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bruce-campbell.com\/\">Bruce Campbell<\/a> in which the Brucester puts to rest a number of rumors that have been causing me some concern:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Campbell will <i>not<\/i> be reprising his role as Old Elvis\/Sebastian Haff in a sequel to the charmingly goofy <i>Bubba Ho-Tep<\/i>. (The sequel &#8212; supposed to be called <i>Bubba Nosferatu<\/i> &#8212; may still go ahead without him, but I don&#8217;t see how anyone could hope to fill those porkchop sideburns the way Bruce did.)<\/li>\n<li>There will be <i>no<\/i> lame-ass mash-up of Freddy (<i>A Nightmare on Elm Street<\/i>), Jason (the <i>Friday the 13th<\/i> series), and Bruce&#8217;s signature character Ash (<i>The Evil Dead<\/i> trilogy).<\/li>\n<li>There will <i>not<\/i> be an <i>Evil Dead 4<\/i>. (Really, what could possibly be left to do after the utter silliness of <i>Army of Darkness<\/i>?)<\/li>\n<li>And finally &#8212; saving the best for last &#8212; there will be <i>no<\/i> remake of the original <i>Evil Dead<\/i> starring Ashton Kutcher as Ash. Said Campbell: &#8220;The feedback from the fans was 90 percent negative.
